Six Amateurs Will Enjoy Final-Round Atmosphere for First Time in History
LA QUINTA, Calif. – One of the truly unique amateur golfing experiences of the last 55 years – playing in the extended Pro-Am as part of the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation – will become even more of an amazing experience the next time it’s played. Beginning in 2014, the event’s top amateur players will be able to play Sunday’s final round with the professionals.
In addition to that change for the 2014 Humana Challenge (Jan. 16-19), the tournament introduces the Club Team Challenge Pro-Am, a new event that features three amateur members of the same club, a PGA TOUR professional and a PGA Club pro. That event will take place Monday, Jan. 13, on the Jack Nicklaus Private Course at PGA WEST.
“We wanted to improve on an already fantastic format by doing even more to upgrade the experience for our amateur competitors,” Humana Challenge Executive Director/CEO Bob Marra said. “Humana has implemented a variety of programs since its sponsorship began to raise the stature of the tournament and the experience for its guests in the pro-am. The opportunity to ‘make the cut’ for those players who have performed the best in the amateur competition will significantly enhance the experience.”
The new format will send the three amateurs with the lowest net score and three amateurs with the lowest gross score after the first three rounds (Thursday-Saturday) into Sunday’s final round, where they will each play with two professionals, starting off the 10th tee. The amateurs will not benefit from the pro’s score but will play individual stroke play from the amateur tees.
Until 2012, amateurs played only the first four rounds of the then five-round tournament. In 2012 and 2013, amateurs played only the first three rounds of what is now a four-round event. The new format will not only reward the top six amateur players over 54 holes but also bring an atmosphere of pressure mixed with excitement that is only felt on a final-round Sunday.
